Greenwich Market Development Update
Thursday 25th March 2010
Greenwich Market could still be demolished and redeveloped since the owner, who is Greenwich Hospital, will appeal against the decision by the council to refuse planning permission.
Edward Dolby of Greenwich Hospital has advised the market traders that they're lodging an appeal against the refusal.
The original plan was that the market and the shops were to be demolished and a new contemporary market would replace it. In addition a new shopping centre and hotel were to be added.
Should the hospital win the appeal, it could actually be in vain. The redevelopment work depends on the new hotel for its viability. But in the last year another scheme to build a new 150 room hotel on the Greenwich High Road has been approved.
So it would currently appear that the likelihood of saving the market seem higher than recently. Now there will need to be another campaign.
